Up & coming brand: African Botanics

African Botanics uses botanicals such as plant butters, seed oils and minerals from remote regions in South Africa

Headquarters: Los Angeles, US
Launched: 2012
Price: $50 – $350

African Botanics is positioned as an ‘eco-luxury’ skincare brand with products made in South Africa using local plants. The brand was founded by South African couple Julia and Craig Noik.

Why it’s interesting: African Botanics uses botanicals such as plant butters, seed oils and minerals from remote regions in South Africa. Most of its ingredients are harvested by local communities in South Africa. “We make products in South Africa using many wild-harvested indigenous plants [and] we focus on sustainability and use vertical integration,” explains co-founder Julia Noik. Raw ingredients are sourced directly from suppliers, and the brand says it makes sure these are harvested with respect for nature.

Strategy & upcoming plans: The brand currently has around 30 skus, ranging from its Fleur d’Afrique face oil to its Infinité Resurfacing Mask. It also has body products, such as its Marula Firming Botanical Oil. Future plans include sourcing new active ingredients to add to its current range of skincare. As for distribution, the brand is available through high-end and niche retailers including US-based natural and organic retailer and spa Credo Beauty, luxury e-tailer Net-a-porter, French clean beauty retailer Oh My Cream and Australian prestige beauty retailer Mecca Cosmetica, as well as Cult Beauty, Violet Grey, Space NK in the US, Revolve and Niche Beauty.
