Why it’s interesting: According to Oates, healthy, radiant skin begins with digestive health. The concept behind The Beauty Chef is to embrace fermentation, which makes the nutrients more available for the body to use. Lacto-fermentation is also a completely natural biological process, adds Oates. “Nutrition is important for glowing skin, and fermented foods give you dense, super-charged nutrition,” says Oates. The topical products are based on fermented ingredients, which make nutrients more bio-available for the skin to use, and probiotics help balance the skin. Strategy & upcoming plans: The brand has launched in around 20 natural beauty and spa outlets in Australia. The company has had interest from overseas markets, confrms Oates, and has taken on two new distributors in the US. New beauty products are also set to launch this year. “We will be a one-stop shop for beauty—living beauty for the inside and out,” says Oates. Papillon Artisan Perfumes Headquarters: Hampshire & London, UK Launch date: June 2014 Price: £94 ($148) Papillon Artisan Perfumes claims to embrace the quality ingredients and traditional methods of artisanal perfumery. The products are created in the company’s studio in Hampshire, UK by perfumer and co-owner Liz Moore. Why it’s interesting: “Our sole aim was to produce a truly artisan product, created with an absolute passion for the perfume itself,” says company director and co-owner Simon Goodland. All the fragrances are created by Moore, who works without a brief, budget constraints or focus groups, he says. “Each of our fragrances has a story behind the creative inspiration and our customers love this,” he adds. Composed using quality ingredients, each fragrance is compounded in small batches, macerated, bottled and boxed by hand at the studio, an extremely rare process in the industry today, says Goodland. Strategy & upcoming plans: The brand’s growth has been driven by word of mouth since the start, claims Goodland.“This approach is perfect for us as it reinforces our philosophy of being truly artisan. For us, continuing to focus on producing beautiful and unique perfumes in-house will always be our number-one priority and our point of difference,” he adds. The company sells the range and samples on its website and through selective niche perfumeries in the UK, the US, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada. It also offers a bespoke service. The brand’s debut three-sku fragrance range was nominated as fnalist in the Best New Independent Fragrance category at the FIFI awards in London. n 112 November-December 2015 - N°24 - BW Confidential
