Chinese retail sales see growth for the first time since December

China retail sales grew 0.5% year-on-year in August to Rmb3.36 trillion ($497.28bn), the first time sales have increased since December 2019.

Retail sales of consumer goods (excluding automobiles) fell 0.6% compared to the same period the year prior.

From January to August, the total retail sales of consumer goods decreased 8.6% year-on-year. Online retail sales of physical sales were up 15.8% for the eight month period.

In August, cosmetics sales rose 19% compared to the same month last year, while, from January to August, cosmetics sales grew 3.2%.

City-based retail sales in August increased 0.5% year-on-year, while at and below country level sales grew 0.7%.
