Clarins creates research center focused on longevity

Clarins has created the Dr Olivier Courtin Clarins Longevity Research Center, which aims to deepen the understanding of the factors that speed up skin aging, as well as the long-term lifestyle choices that influence wellbeing over time.

The center will be overseen by an international scientific committee chaired by Olivier Courtin-Clarins. It will bring together experts from a range of disciplines, including aging biology, dermatology, epidemiology, behavioral science, biomedical engineering, and data science.

Based at Clarins’ headquarters in Paris and its laboratories in Pontoise, the center will focus on providing strategic direction for Clarins Research by identifying and developing new areas of research in longevity, informed by current scientific discoveries and emerging societal needs.

It will support doctoral and postdoctoral research programs in longevity through collaborations with universities and research institutions in France and internationally.

The center will also share research findings through publications, symposia, and specialized workshops to inform the scientific community and other relevant stakeholders.

The Longevity Research Center places epigenetics at the core of its scientific approach, which views aging as a dynamic process shaped by everyday choices.

Olivier Courtin-Clarins, said: “Skin that ages more quickly can indicate a deeper imbalance: inflammation, chronic stress, poor sleep, inadequate nutrition or excessive environmental exposure. Today, longevity therefore relies on an integrative approach: diet, physical activity, stress management, emotional health, prevention and, of course, skincare.”

Through the new research facility, Clarins intends to continue to explore areas of aging, including which biomarkers are associated with skin aging and how individuals can influence their own skin longevity.

The company has identified eight of the key biomarkers that impact skin longevity and paired them with products that it claims targets them. The eight biomarkers are: epigenetic changes, altered cellular communication, loss of proteostasis, depletion of stem cells, mitochodrial dysfunction, chronic inflammation, cellular senescence, and disabled macroautophagy.

Olivier Courtin-Clarins, said: “Today the science of longevity allows us to greatly influence the behavior of skin, and I imagine it will undoubtedly reverse it sometime in the future.”
