Social-media buzz from Retail & Tech No 21

BW Confidential checks out what is making a splash on social media: Checkcosmetic.net

Beauty enthusiasts on TikTok are recommending the website checkcosmetic.net as a way to verify the best-by date for products.

The move comes after TikTok user Canon Ryder posted a video of himself checking the manufacture date of a skincare product on his smartphone while in a discount store. The results showed the product had been produced 10 years ago and he warned viewers to check the date in-store before buying beauty products.

Checkcosmetic.net lets users enter the batch code of any beauty product to find out its manufacture date. On the site, users enter the brand and the batch code at the bottom of the packaging. It then shows when the item was manufactured, the product’s shelf life and suggests how much longer the item can be used for.

Ryder’s video went viral and many beauty TikTokers with strong followings began posting their own versions, revealing the best-by dates of their beauty products. Consumer magazines have also reshared Ryder’s video, including the likes of Bustle, Nylon and The Zoe Report, among others.
