Social-media trends from Retail & Tech No 27

Currently trending in beauty

DIY serums. TikTok users are making their own serums after a video from social-media user Shapla Hoque began making the rounds on the social-media platform. In the video, Hoque extracts the formula from a sheet mask and stores it in an empty skincare bottle, thereby creating her own serum from the mask so she can use it every day rather than just once. Commentators applauded the use, saying that the technique is both eco-friendly and saves money.

Mixing pigments. Mixing pigments are trending across social media, as users talk about their must-have products from 2020. Users say that mixing pigments was useful last year when stores were closed, given the difficulty in finding their foundation shade online. The pigment  liquid product comes in shades like blue, white, dark brown, yellow and red and can be added to foundation to either lighten or darken it, or offset tones like orange. The featured pigments are usually from brands like e.l.f. Beauty and LA Girl Cosmetics. Social-media users note that the technique has also saved them money.

Nyx Cosmetics Shine Loud High Shine Lip Color. The long-wear liquid lipstick from the L’Oréal-owned cosmetics brand is popular with social-media users. The double-ended product features one side with liquid lip color, while the other includes a clear gloss. Users have posted videos, mainly on TikTok, reviewing the product and testing its 16-hour-wear claim. While Nyx Cosmetics has a TikTok sound on its own TikTok account featuring the lip product in one of its posts, social media users have made their own videos and responded to each other rather than using the brand’s account.
